Carousel Characters..

My very local cafe, Flood Street Carousel has been open for 6 months now and owner Caleb Maynard and I have collaborated on an exhibition of his regular customers..

'Cal' is all for the local community and working with other local business people, to try and develope the Leichhardt area. The cafe has done very well since he opened his doors, in December of last year. I pop down every morning for a couple of coffees and have got to know him and a lot of the regulars well, it's become a real social centre for young mums and business people a like..

I approached Cal a month or so ago and ask about shooting a series of 'real' portraits of his regular customers, Cal loved the idea and we set to work on getting around 24 of them, for the shoot..
Which then in turn would be exhibited at the cafe, with an open night, so all his customers could come down, have a drink and meet each other..

All up I shot around 40 portraits of customers and staff, which we've edited down to the final series of 24.. Cal wanted a real cross section of his daily customers and suppliers, people he has got to know, as well as their order..

I set up a simple lighting rig up in a corner of the cafe and we had a steady stream of people through, on Monday of last week. I approached all the talent the same way and only spent 90 seconds photographing each person, as it is a busy environment and didn't want for people to be too self conscious..

The full series will follow after the exhibition on the 7th of June..

Pigment.. Jasper Knight... Part2

I met Jasper Knight about six weeks ago, before he jetted off to Japan, he's a easy going kind of chap and I look forward to when I shoot his portrait for my series.. Archibald winner Knight's style is by far the most diverse of the Pigment series to date, his bold use of bright pop art colours, his trade mark.. And this is where I wanted to concentrate on..

He had thrown out a couple of paintings, which I rescued from the rubbish bin, though torn up I chose to focus on these pieces for his section..

His colour palette is throughout all he throws out, blacks, bright yellow, royal blue and reds..

I has shot Jasper's series a few weeks back, but I wanted to shoot more images and in a different approach and upload these as his final images for the series, as I felt it was a better representation of him and his work..

The Pick.. Brendan Maclean...

Musician and Actor Brendan has been photographed by me on numerous occasions, he mentioned he wears his adult sized Pokemon outfit sometimes on stage, so I said lets photograph you in for a new
series.. I think I spent too long faffing about...

I have also shot him as Pokemon 'Madonna with Child', Olive making her debut in front of the lens, this series to follow in the next blog..

Mr Maclean is always game for laugh and never minds making fun of himself in front of the lens, that's why he makes such good subject matter..

Pigment.. Jasper Knight.

I met Jasper through a mutual friend Joel Gibson, who he went to Uni with.. Jasper is the youngest artist in the series so far and has the most diverse style and colour palette..  I briefly met Jasper at his current show in Sydney and arranged to go in last week before he went to Tokyo..  Jasper's studio space on entering it, has a colour code throughout, a bright 'Pop Art' theme...

Jasper had chipboard flooring around the edge of his studio floor, which he replaces from time to time, when its really covered in paint. I asked him if I could get a piece cut up to take away and he obliged, along with that, two stools and two ripped up paintings in his bin, set the tone for his series..

What I've enjoyed about Jasper's images are the graphic nature to them and the strong colour's he uses throughout his work..

I will be shooting Jasper in the coming week's for the series..
